Loving others is not about what you get in return, it is about sharing the love of God.

Love that you experience for another person can be a one-way street and still be from God. You can’t go wrong if you’re doing what God wants you to do. Although sometimes it may cause you some pain, God will always provide comfort for you. (2 Corinthians1:5 – For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.) The more selfless you can be, the more reward there will be in your life. (Philippians 2:3 – Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves.) This does not mean that you let people walk all over you, yet you should understand what your purpose or role is in each person’s life that you encounter, and with a humble heart remain steadfast in fulfilling whatever God has placed you in their life to accomplish.
When love is one-way, it can be enough if you know how to keep it in your heart. As long as your heart is filled with love, you can’t feel empty. (Proverbs 3:3-4 – Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.) So why does it still hurt so badly? Maybe because you have so much to give that you feel like you could implode, but you are unable to feel a release because there’s no outlet to share it with. Many marriages or relationships are tested by the ability to endure one-way love, whether it’s a temporary issue or something that goes on for an extended period of time. As the one who is expressing and giving love, this can be very challenging and painful. We’re not supposed to ask “Why?”, but you can’t help but wonder, why does God let you feel such deep love for a person who hurts you badly? In looking deeply from a spiritual nature, one could say, “What greater strength of love is there than one that survives pain?” That may be the kind of love that keeps us closest to God – since God is love and you choose through pain and suffering to hold onto love, than you’ve truly chosen God. (1 John 4:16 – And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in them.)
So keep fighting – fight to hold onto the love that is implanted in your soul no matter what may not reciprocate from it. This is God making you stronger in Him. Divine power is being submerged within you. Then you need to deliver that love to others who need it. That brings it full circle. (1 John 4:12 – No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.)
Although you may not be receiving exactly what you want back from another, if you are loving them, then you are loving God. Your soul is being fed from the Divine Spirit of God within you.
